Eight cheap eats in and around Ipswich for dining on a budget, including Codfellas, St Lawrence’s Church and Waterfront Diner




As the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite, being able to feed a family on a budget is becoming more important than ever.

But look no further, as we have put together a list of eight 'cheap eat' locations in and around Ipswich, according to TripAdvisor reviews.

These eateries promise quality without the high price tag and offer everything from light bites and lunches to hot meals and treats.

Waterfront Diner

This diner and café on the shores of Suffolk Water Park in Bramford, just outside the town, is known for its breakfast menu and maintains a 4.5-star rating.

The team have been hard at work providing food for visitors to the park for over a decade, and work to get meals out in a timely fashion.

Outdoor seating is available.

One happy reviewer said: “I have been three times now when visiting my sister and can honestly say it’s the best breakfast I’ve ever had.

“The set up works perfectly and the staff are friendly and the food is served quickly and is delicious.

“I do not live nearby, and despite only being in the three times, I was already recognised and given a friendly welcome.”

This Indian and Bangladeshi eatery, in Woobridge Road, currently has a 4.5 star rating on TripAdvisor.

It offers dinner service and takeaways.

One reviewer said: “We visited last night with friends and we weren’t disappointed.

“Food was delicious as always and the service was fantastic. Thanks for a lovely evening.”

This kebab shop, in Spring Road, maintains a five-star rating after over 100 reviews.

Depending on whether you want it small or large, kebabs range from between £6.50 and £9, not including the £12.50 mixed kebab. Standard wraps will set you back £6.50, while a special wrap costs £6.80.

Pizzas come in three sizes, 9 inches, 12 inches and 15 inches and range from £6 to £13.

If you fancy a full meal, you can buy meal deals, which start at £17, whilst extra meals, such as burgers or chicken, will cost between £4 and £6, and a portion of chips costs £2.50.

“They are terrific and make a visit a highlight, they lift your spirit and leave you feeling great.”

This Chantry chippy has been nominated for awards and was rated the best place in the country for fish and chips last year.

Located in Greenfinch Avenue, the shop is popular with locals.

Children’s meals cost £4.20, and senior citizens can dine for £5.

Even a large cod won’t break the bank, as it costs £6.50.

It has a five-star rating on TripAdvisor.

One happy reviewer said: “This chippy is hands down the best in the country. We are extra privileged to cal it our local. The owner and staff are the most generous, friendly people and we recently found that they support local causes too.

“The chips are out of this world tasty and the portion sizes are huge.

“Even better is that the cost does no way reflect what you get. There is nothing bad to say about this place.”

Located in a former church in Dial Lane, St Lawrence community café offers breakfast and lunch options throughout the day.

It boasts as 4.5-star rating on TripAdvisor and is popular during the weekends when shoppers visit the high street.

If you needed another reason to dine here, the café is run by the charity Realise Futures, which offers employment opportunities to those with learning difficulties.

One happy reviewer said: “Ipswich is very short of decent and well priced cafes.

“This is by far the best in the town centre. Not only that, you are supporting the team and very special people who work here, so it really is a win-win all round.”

Described by one reviewer as a ‘hidden gem’, this pub is located just outside Ipswich, in Tattingstone, and has a five-star rating on TripAdvisor.

On offer is traditional pub grub during lunch and dinner hours.

One reviewer said: “The Wheatsheaf never ceases to please.

“I have never known such superbly kept beers, straight from the barrel and always a good selection for different tastes. This pub is a great find for those at home and away.”

This colourful little family-run café tucked away in St Nicholas Street is known for cakes and sausage rolls.

Offerings range from salads and sandwiches to baked potatoes and chili con carne.

Specials change every week, so return visitors get a new treat to tuck into each time they visit.

For example, a meal of teriyaki salmon can cost as little as £8.50 when on offer, while a half-rack of ribs will cost the same.

One reviewer said: “This is an amazing cafe. We came upon it by accident while looking for somewhere to have breakfast.

“It is now the first place I'd go to for anything to eat. Really friendly, food is fantastic quality, great atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit.”

I-Scream opened in 1999 and has a large selection of ice creams on offer.
