Celebrated vocal group perform in aid of Newmarket church
Newmarket’s St Mary’s Church will be playing host to one of the world’s most celebrated vocal groups who will be singing to help raise funds to repair the church.
Twice Grammy-nominated Stile Antico will be in Newmarket as part of their tenth anniversary season tour on Friday March 27.
The church has been awarded Lottery grant of £97,100 and last autumn received a ‘development’ instalment of £7,700, to help with its plans.
Now the church needs to raise a further £6,000 so the Lottery will progress with the remainder of the main grant.
Janet Ramsay Helie, concert organiser, said: “Stile Antico performed a concert at St Mary’s five years ago and we’re very lucky to get them back.
“They have been touring in the United States and are now internationally acclaimed.”
The 12-piece ensemble focuses on 16th and 17th century polyphonic music, tackling works from a variety of composers. The group is praised for its programming, which helps to shine new light on Renaissance music.
Tickets, which are £22 (£20 concessions) are available from Newmarket Tourist Information in The Guineas, Balaam’s Music in Bury St Edmunds, or call 01638 603489.
