Faith leaders come together in Elveden for memorial to exiled Sikh ruler Duleep Singh

Faith community leaders and a Bollywood film director were among those who came together on Sunday to honour Duleep Singh.

Duleep Singh was the last ruler of the Sikh Empire, and was exiled to Britain in 1854 after being deposed by the British.

He owned an estate in Elveden, and is buried in the cemetery of St Andrew and St Patrick's Church.

Representatives from the local Sikh, Hindu and Muslim communities joined Thetford’s mayor, Cllr Jane James, at the church for a service remembering Singh.

A number of wreaths were laid, including by the head boy and girl of Thetford Academy.

Among those in attendance were director Kajri Babbar – who is currently working on a film about Singh’s daughter – and Major Daljinder Singh Virdee, from the Defence Sikh Network.

History Peter Bance said of the memorial: "What made this year's event even more unique than previous memorials we have held is that we had wreaths laid by members of the Sikh, Hindu and Muslim communities, in addition to the local dignitaries.

"Each year, we try and make the event more inclusive, and having schoolchildren from the Thetford Academy lay a wreath this year was a special touch."
