Sudbury players show their best at regionals

Sudbury were on top form winning seven of the 10 events played in the North Essex County Federation Finals played at Sudbury Bowls Club.

Three clubs make up the federation – Sudbury, Haverhill and Saffron Walden.

The games are played to significantly different rules and with usually only two bowls, so a quicker and sometimes more exiting game can be seen.

In-form Sudbury player Eileen Parker won three events – ladies’ singles (four bowls), beating Haverhill’s Peggy Mizon 21-16; ladies’ senior singles, again against Peggy Mizon 21-19 and, paired with Aaron Phillips, in the mixed pairs, beating Malcolm Grimwood and Monica Snook of Sudbury 17-8.

In the ladies’ rinks the Sudbury trio of Monica Snook, Val Noy and Clarrie Gooderham beat Haverhill’s Lorna Dockerill, Stephanie Smith and Brenda Jay 21-17.

In the men’s rinks Sudbury’s Aaron Phillips, Graham Smith and David Parker played a skilful and determined game, winning 23-9 against Haverhill’s S Nichols, B Lancee and E Kiddle.

The men’s senior singles was an all-Sudbury affair, with Malcolm Grimwood dispatching Colin Tuxworth 21-9.

In the mixed rinks, Sudbury’s Malcolm Grimwood, Graham Gooderham and Monica Snook beat Haverhill’s S Nichols, P Mizon and T Howard 23-14.

The men’s singles was won by Steve Botten (Haverhill), the men’s pairs by Steve Botten and Malcolm Page and the ladies’ pairs by S Smith and J Dowding (Haverhill).

Certificates were awarded on the day before the end of season presentation of trophies.

The winners now go forward to the National Federation Finals in Newark in late April.
