BREAKING: Bury Town’s semi-final tonight is OFF

The wet weather has put paid to Bury Town’s hopes of causing a cup upset to reach the final of the Suffolk FA Premier Cup against Lowestoft Town at Needham Market FC tonight (Wednesday, March 9).

The former Ryman League Premier Division rivals were set to lock horns for the first time since April, 2014, where Bury lost 2-1 at Ram Meadow on the Trawlerboys’ charge to promotion to the Conference North (now National League North).

But the second postponement in four days for Bury is likely to be music to the ears of Blues boss Ben Chenery, who was set to go into the game with another lengthy injury list, having seen some welcome recuperation time afforded at the weekend with the home game with Harlow Town falling victim to a waterlogged surface.

The last time the sides met in the Suffolk Premier Cup, Bury knocked out Lowestoft with a 4-0 victory in west Suffolk in October, 2013, going on to lift the cup with victory over Felixstowe & Walton United (4-1), having beaten Lowestoft in the final at Ipswich Town’s Portman Road the previous season.

Suffolk FA, the organisers of the knockout cup competition, sponsored by Omni Freight Services Ltd, have said the tie will now be rescheduled on a date to be advised in due course.

Following last night’s game on AFC Sudbury’s artificial pitch though, Leiston will await the winners in the final after defeating Needham Market 1-0 to reach their first Premier Cup Final for eight years.

Meanwhile, Wednesday evening’s semi-final in the Suffolk FA Under-18 Midweek Youth Cup sponsored by Days Sports between AFC Sudbury and Newmarket Town at Haverhill Rovers FC has also been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
