War-themed painting at Sudbury charity shop up for auction to raise money for St Nicholas Hospice Care

A poignant painting that depicts war veterans from the Victorian era to the present day is going under the hammer to raise vital funds for charity.

Branch manager Peter Metz stumbled across the unusual artwork after it was donated to the St Nicholas Hospice Care charity shop in Sudbury.

By auctioning off the commissioned painting, he hopes the funds will be maximised for the hospice in Bury St Edmunds, which provides vital support for people living with a terminal illness.

The artwork is being showcased in the shop’s front window in the run-up to Armistice Day, when the whole country remembers those who fought during the First World War.

Mr Metz said the commemorations were especially significant in the town.

“We have a memorial display in our shop window every year because we have a strong military presence in Sudbury,” he said.” “So we make sure we respect that.”

A series of poppies have been crafted by volunteer Robin Hart, which are also on show in the store window in Gainsborough Street.
