Hadleigh plans series of public celebrations for military community to mark Armed Forces Week
A public celebration of Suffolk’s Armed Forces community, which was cancelled last year because of the coronavirus pandemic, is set to arrive in Hadleigh next month, subject to the government roadmap going ahead as planned.
Plans for the free community ‘thank you’ event, as part of the annual Armed Forces Week, have been announced to take place in the Market Square on Thursday, June 24, from 4.30pm.
Organised by Babergh District Council and Hadleigh Town Council, in collaboration with local Armed Forces representatives, it is hoped to feature a strong military presence, as well as performances by local bands and dance troupes.
A summer fete hosted by the town’s Royal British Legion branch has also been provisionally planned for Armed Forces Day itself – Saturday, June 26 – while the Armed Forces Day flag will be raised at the local war memorial throughout the week.
Local businesses will play their part by participating in an Armed Forces Week-themed shop window trail, with prizes available for those entering the competition.
A spokeswoman for Babergh District Council confirmed that the events, which are part of the authority’s commitment to The Armed Forces Covenant, will be dependent on the Government confirming that current Covid-19 restrictions can be lifted on Monday, June 21.
Derek Davis, cabinet member for communities for Babergh District Council, said: “It’s an honour for Hadleigh to be able to host Armed Forces Week, showcasing all the town has to offer, while, more importantly, raising awareness of our military residents and the sacrifices that they and their families continue to make.
“I’m sure Babergh’s communities will want to join me in thanking all those who have selflessly given years of their life to help keep us safe.
“We are determined to find a Covid secure way for them to do so, following the disappointment of having to postpone last year’s events.”
