A Sudbury transport company has unveiled plans to increase bus services to and from the town – bucking the recent trend of service cuts at the bus station.

Chambers Coaches, which is based out of a depot in Meekings Road, announced it is introducing services travelling to and from Sudbury Bus Station, starting on Tuesday, May 29, with the firm stating it believes the new bus lines will make using public transport a more appealing prospect for commuters in the area.

The additions will include more journeys from Bury St Edmunds to Sudbury, via Lavenham and Long Melford, and buses up to every 30 minutes on the line from Sudbury to Colchester, via Bures.

The announcement comes after a number of bus lines to and from the station were axed in recent months, including the main Beestons service between Sudbury and Great Cornard, and a number of Regal Busways services between Sudbury and Halstead.

But Jeremy Cooper, Chambers managing director, said the move, along with its new driver training programme, showed the company was committed to investing in the local community.

“We believe this investment in a more attractive service will persuade many more people to use the bus – sharing our road space will benefit everyone in the community,” he said.

“This is the latest stage of our development of the Chambers business, following our launch of a new training facility earlier in the year.

“We are really excited by the opportunities it presents to re-establish bus travel as a genuine alternative for people.

“We have a hard-working and dedicated team of people at Chambers and they are all keen to deliver this improved service to local people.”
