Primary school in Sudbury shocked after thieves steal outdoor play equipment

A headteacher has spoken of his anguish, after a primary school in Sudbury was targeted by thieves.

Outdoor play equipment was stolen during the break-in at Woodhall Primary School, in Mayflower Way, between Friday, June 29, and Monday, July 2.

Among the stolen items was a metal play tent, two gym mats and three shower curtains, which had been used as underwater props.

The equipment had recently been purchased for the school’s nursery children, who are aged three and four.

“We had a number of different pieces of engaging outdoor equipment taken, including various play mats and a much-loved underwater feature,” said headteacher Matthew Fuller.

“It also appears they tried to take other things from the site, including a steel picnic bench.”

Mr Fuller explained that the incident had deprived youngsters of playing equipment which had aided their learning.

“It is clearly very disappointing that the school was targeted in this way, especially when it now affects the education we can offer to our youngest children,” he said.

“We don’t have the budget to replace this equipment, so all we can do is hope our insurance covers some of the cost,” added Mr Fuller, who urged people with information relating the incident to contact police.

“We would, of course, join Suffolk Police in appealing for anyone with information to get in touch with them.”
