SUDBURY FIRE UPDATE: No suggestion of foul play

Police have said there is no suggestion of foul play as investigations continue into the major fire which destroyed buildings and forced 20 households to be evacuated from Sudbury town centre on Sunday evening.

At the town council meeting on Tuesday night a letter from Sergeant Matt Paisley was read out confirming police would remain at the scene throughout the night and into Wednesday at the very least.

He said: “At this time, there is still no suggestion that the fire was suspicious in any way.

“However, until the Fire Service have completed their investigations, and our own crime scene investigators have analysed the scene, we will continue to provide a uniform presence in order to protect the scene as best as possible.”

Town councillor Luke Cresswell asked why crews from Sudbury were beaten to the scene by a crew from Long Melford.

Suffolk county councillor Colin Spence said responses would be looked into but it was too early for any conclusions.

Mr Spence also asked for patience while the county council found out the extent of any Government spending cuts affecting council budgets and therefore fire service budgets.
