Student from Lavenham voices gratitude after receiving £3,600 educational grant towards university studies

A former student from Thomas Gainsborough School in Great Cornard has been awarded a prestigious educational grant to help support her studies at a renowned university.

Francesca Perkins-Taylor, from Lavenham, secured a £3,600 Educational Award from the Fraternal Board of National Friendly Society at Oddfellows.

Established in the 19th century, the society, which is a not-for-profit organisation, provides a range of social, care and financial support to its branch members.

Having embarked on a philosophy MA at the University of St Andrew’s in Scotland, Francesca highlighted the benefits of the money.

“I’m very grateful to the Oddfellows, and my grandmother, who encouraged me to apply for this award,” she said. “I no longer need to worry about saving up for important course texts, which means I can relax and enjoy my classes.”

Having achieved an A* and two As at A-level, the 18-year-old secured a place at the prestigious university, which is the third oldest institution in the UK.

“Being able to study here at St Andrew’s is a pleasure,” she said. “It’s such a beautiful and historic town.

“I’m hoping to go into teaching when I graduate, as the critical thinking that the study of philosophy develops is a crucial life skill I think everybody would benefit from.”

Praising her achievement, branch secretary of the Border Counties branch, Isabel Sherlock said: “Being able to support Francesca on her journey is a huge honour, and we couldn’t be more proud of her achievements so far.”
