SLIDESHOW: Rain-soaked crowds at Lavenham Carnival keep calm and carry on

Visitors to Lavenham’s 1940s themed carnival got in the wartime spirit on bank holiday Monday - keeping calm and carrying on despite the heavens opening.

Hundreds flocked to see the procession of war time vehicles, classic cars and floats trundle through the centre of the village carrying people dressed as war time evacuees, the home guard, armed forces and land girls.

The fun then moved to the recreation ground where visitors could shelter from the rain in the event’s marquee, browse the host of local food and drink stalls, see the Hounds from the Suffolk Hunt or check out the hundreds of vintage and ‘rare breed’ cars on display.

Entertainment inside the marquee came from 1940s nine-piece band The Skyliner Band, live acrobatics from Abigail Collins and dancing with the Ragroof Players.

Annie Eves-Boland, speaking on behalf of the carnival committee, said she would like to thank everyone who braved the rain.

“It went really well despite the bad weather,” she said

“It was really great, everyone turned up and carried on regardless.

“The day showed the community spirit and collaboration is still very much alive and kicking in Lavenham.

“We would like to thank everyone who attended and supported Lavenham Carnival.

“We might have had the elements against us but no one was going to rain on our parade.

“The procession was a wonderful sight and set the tone for the whole event which showcased the great community spirit that exists in Lavenham.”
