Retired firefighter from Lavenham publishes memoirs on service at Sudbury Fire Station
A former firefighter has reminisced about his fond memories serving in Sudbury, through the release of a new book.
The Fire Bells Are Ringing provides an insight into John Middleditch’s time at Sudbury Fire Station, which he joined in a part-time position in 1967, eight months after the facility opened.
Mr Middleditch was opposed to the fire service’s national strike action in 1977, which saw around 30,000 firefighters campaign for a 30 per cent pay rise.
“I resisted the strike,” said the 75-year-old, who lives in Brent Eleigh Road, Lavenham. “I joined the fire service to help people, not to stand in a picket line.
“I was more concerned about supporting the community than getting extra money,” added Mr Middleditch.
