Proposed replacement for ageing community pavilion is essential for Raydon, says leading Babergh councillor

A planned replacement for a village’s ageing community pavilion is in the pipeline, after the current venue was deemed to have reached the end of its usable life.

The King George’s Field Trustees are seeking planning permission to demolish the existing pavilion in Raydon and replace it with a new permanent building.

Situated off The Street, the facility has served various social and recreational uses since its construction 24 years ago.

A planning statement said the venue had become tired after more than two decades of use and was in need of investment.

However, as it was only intended to be a temporary structure, the proposal suggests renovating the existing site is not suitable, meaning a full rebuild is necessary.

“The existing pavilion is used on a regular basis, so a new building is essential to fulfil the ongoing need for a community space by local residents, clubs and societies in Raydon,” the statement said.

“The new building will also contain changing facilities, which are necessary to support continued use of the playing fields by local football clubs.”

Babergh District Council deputy leader John Ward voiced his support for the plans.

He suggested a new pavilion was now particularly important, after Raydon Village Hall was sold for residential development.

“It is difficult to express how strongly I support this application,” said Mr Ward.

“Raydon really needs this facility – the current prefab pavilion is at the end of its life and the village hall has now been sold and wasn’t really suitable for that purpose.

“The new pavilion would be a magnificent asset. Raydon is very lucky to have an exceptional recreation area in King George’s Field, which can accommodate it.

“Everyone I have spoken to in the village is really excited about this project.

“The team behind this project has put in a tremendous amount of work and now has credible funding, including the proceeds from the sale of the village hall.”
