Police pledge to continue proactive action against drug dealing in Sudbury during coronavirus lockdown

Suffolk Police remain proactive in tackling drug dealing, following claims that the criminal activity was operating in Sudbury during the coronavirus lockdown.

Town councillor Adrian Osborne raised concerns last week that drug dealers had been flouting social distancing rules – measures imposed by the Government to prevent the spread of the disease – by visiting various homes in Minden Road, Cavendish Way and Gainsborough Road.

During a council meeting hosted via video conference, Cllr Osborne said residents had contacted him about the problem, claiming that the individuals spotted had been of “quite considerable numbers”.

Confirming that the force was aware of the issue, a spokesman for Suffolk Police said the force remained committed to combating crime during the UK-wide lockdown.

“We continue to identify those who are involved in the supply of controlled drugs and take appropriate timely action to tackle this issue, using a wide range of tactics and resources,” he said.

The spokesman added that, with the support of the serious crime disruption teams, Operation Scorpion and Sentinel, the force was “continuing to be on the front foot”, while intelligence-led operations connected with criminal activity and illegal drug trafficking were being conducted.

The force’s day-to-day duties had not been impacted by the pandemic, added the spokesman.
