PICTURES: Wartime experience brought to life at Kentwell Hall in Long Melford

A trip down memory lane at Kentwell Hall in Long Melford at the weekend included 60 actors in uniforms and scores of wartime memorabilia.

Historic Kentwell Hall staged its annual The Hall in Wartime event, which combines war – and peace – from four different eras.

Visitors were encouraged to find out about what life was like for people during the war, to discuss the implications of conflict and the merits of peace at the hall’s own peace camp.

Taking place on Saturday and Sunday, actors dressed in wartime costumes and outfits worn by the Tudors and Georgians, as well as soldiers in the First and Second World Wars to help illustrate the impact of war across history and how it would have played out at Kentwell Hall.

One of the activities was an archery competition staged by actors in Tudor costumes, who demonstrated and explained longbow archery and crafts.

Actors dressed up as an 1815 Georgian recruiting party to roam the grounds.

There was also a detachment of the Army Service Corps portraying the personnel who kept the front lines supplied and the men from the Essex Regiment who set up camp on the front lawns.

In the hall, cooks were busy in the kitchen re-enacting the year 1919, with the family in the hall entertaining guests.

Kentwell’s next big event is Tudor High Summer, which runs from August 17 to 26.
