Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help spruce up one of Sudbury’s major landmarks at the weekend, following the launch of a crowd-funding appeal to support regeneration plans at the site.
Around a dozen people lent a hand to the St Peter’s Spring Clean on Saturday, undeterred by the strong winds of Storm Dennis as they worked to tidy the appearance of the venue and its external gardens.
The event followed the launch of the Save the heart of Sudbury campaign on Friday, which is seeking donations of £20,000 towards a multi-million pound project aiming to regenerate the building.
Peter Grey, chairman of the Friends of St Peter’s, told the Free Press: “It’s all about getting people to feel they can take pride in the place. Our regeneration programme is about opening it up to people.
“A lot of people put money in our donation boxes and feel warmly towards the place, but some people might feel their contribution is a more practical one, so they might want to roll up their sleeves rather than reach into their pockets.
“We want people to be able to support St Peter’s in whatever way suits them.”
