New community cycling zone unveiled at Belle Vue Park in Sudbury
A former skate park has been transformed into a designated cycling zone at a public green space in Sudbury.
The new facility at Belle Vue Park has been unveiled by Babergh District Council as part of an ambitious scheme to encourage people to keep fit in the community.
The initiative follows work on the skate park and multi-purpose games area, which was developed earlier this year in partnership with the town council, various community groups and skate park users.
Designed as a multi-purpose area, the facility will enable major town and community events – such as Sudbury Carnival and Party in the Park – to be hosted on the site, while providing a facility for youngsters to master their cycling skills throughout the year.
Praising the scheme, Derek Davis, cabinet member for communities at Babergh District Council, said he hoped the area would serve the town well for the future.
“The creation of this new cycling proficiency area is another exciting step for Belle Vue Park, and forms part of our ongoing investment to improve both play provision at the park, and leisure facilities across the district,” he said.
“The former skate park space is well-used for community activities throughout the year, so, by turning it into a multi-purpose hard surface for year-round use, both for major town and community events like the carnival and Party in the Park, while providing youngsters with a space to practice their cycling skills, I’m sure it will be enjoyed for many years to come.”
Highlighting the benefits of boosting fitness in the community, Cllr Davis added: “Providing the facilities needed is really important for us, as we work towards achieving the aims set out in our leisure, sport and physical activities and communities strategies, to encourage our residents to get more active.”
