Ambitious pool players from around Sudbury came together to see who would be named the champion in a competition that raised more than £1,000 for charity.

The knockout format tournament was held at The Bay Horse in Melford Road, Sudbury, on Sunday, to raise money for St Nicholas Hospice Care.

The competition was set up in memory of Pete Martin, a former local pool league chairman who died 10 years ago.

In all, 32 competitors took part, with Chris Drake beating John Bland 3-0 in the final.

Landlord Charlie Drake said he was pleased with the amount raised, which was collected through entrance fees into the tournament, donations and sales from the popular barbecue.

“For a single day, that’s really quite a good effort,” said Mr Drake. “The pub was very busy and everyone was in good spirits.”

He added that the event was a fitting tribute to Mr Martin.
