Labour Party unveils South Suffolk candidate at general election campaign launch event in Hadleigh

Elizabeth Hughes has been selected as Labour’s prospective Parliamentary candidate for the South Suffolk constituency in December’s general election.

Mrs Hughes, 55, lives in Ipswich, where she is a Labour and Co-operative Party councillor for Ipswich Borough Council’s Gipping ward.

She has stood twice before as a Labour prospective Parliamentary candidate in general elections – in North Essex in 2005 and in Mid Norfolk in 2010.

She works as a quality assurance technician in the consumer goods and manufacturing industry, auditing companies based in the UK and Europe.

She said she was delighted to stand in South Suffolk, where she would champion jobs and vocational training and said she welcomed Labour’s election pledge to spend £3 billion on adult education if elected.

She said: “I was dismayed to read a survey recently that showed some of our poorest paid workers are from Suffolk. Some of our manufacturing salaries are not great.

“There are not a lot of opportunities for vocational training and I am absolutely delighted to hear the news about £3 billion pledged for adult education.”

Mrs Hughes added that she was interested in encouraging more business vocational training.
