Mid Suffolk and Babergh District Council launch new bin lorries, named after Ed Sheeran, Stranger Things and Strictly Come Dancing

Bin lorries powered by vegetable oil and named after celebrities including Ed Sheeran, will be hitting the streets of Suffolk in the coming days.

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council used a competition to name their 22 new environmentally friendly bin lorries, which cost a total of £2m.

Local children came up with some of the winning names - with schools in Hadleigh and Stowmarket amongst those getting involved.

Some of the highlights on the list include: Ed Sheerbin, Gary Bineker, Stranger Bins and the The Binbetweeners.

Mission Binpossible, Bincredible Hulk and The Adventures of Binbin, were also chosen by the judges: the councils’ crews and waste team.

The new bin lorries will replace many of the current vehicles which have emptied around 40 billion bins over their working lifetimes.

You may spot the new lorries, making collections in Stowmarket, Needham Market, Hadleigh and Sudbury, over the coming weeks.

They will be fuelled by certified sustainable hydrotreated vegetable oil which is produced from waste cooking oil.

Last year the district council became the first rural one in the UK to switch to eco-friendly fuel.

It will mean they can continue cutting their carbon emissions by up to 90%, as well as reducing other pollutants.

Cllr Elisabeth Malvisi, cabinet member for environment at Babergh District Council, said: “We have been absolutely bowled over by the response to our competition from residents of all ages – who’ve showcased their wordplay skills.

“We know that many in our community anticipate the arrival of our bin crews.

"They carry out over 100,000 collections every week, and we hope that the new lorries’ names and colourful designs will provide some light fun for everyone."
