Hive charity granted planning permission to convert defunct United Reformed Church in Sudbury into community hub
A charity, which provides vital support for voluntary groups and organisations, has moved a significant step closer to successfully turning a defunct church in Sudbury into a community hub.
Following the launch of its ambitious campaign to purchase the former United Reformed Church, The Hive has been granted planning permission to convert the site into a multi-purpose facility.
Reflecting on the charity’s achievement, trustee Lesley Ford-Platt, who is leading the project, said: “We are delighted that planning consent has been granted and we are very grateful for the donations so far.”
The charity hopes to offer a range of meeting rooms at the site in School Street for a variety of community groups and support services, with organisations already keen to return to the site.
“We have had support from many people and it’s good to know we have groups who want to use the building as soon as we acquire it,” said Mrs Ford-Platt.
So far, the charity has secured more than £200,000 in donations, which have been pledged by organisations and members of the public.
The charity is in the process of negotiating a sale price for the site with Eastern Region Synod of the URC, which owns the building.
Once this is complete, major renovation work will be undertaken to ensure the site is fit for purpose.
Since the campaign was established two years ago, the charity has received valuable support from individuals, including an architect, surveyor and valuer.
“Because there was no money in the bank for the project, we have had to find a number of people who have offered their services free of charge,” said Mrs Ford-Platt.
A further funding appeal has been launched online, which closes on Thursday, while other donations can be donated by calling 01787 372171.
