Hedingham School students advance to finals of £1,000 Design a Sub competition
Business study students Max O’Shea, Ben Matthews and Fraser Felton have come up with a unique food offering, which has been short-listed for the final of a regional competition.
The 17-year-old students from Hedingham School are finalists in the Design a Sub Challenge run by takeaway restaurant chain Subway.
The pupils produced a new sub consisting of meatballs, chicken, pepperoni and onions.
If successful, their sub will be rolled out in 100 Subway stores across East Anglia and they will win £1,000 in Amazon vouchers.
Gareth Nolan, Hedingham’s business studies teacher, said: “We are so proud that our students have been short-listed as finalists in the challenge.
“The team have worked really hard to create their sub and it has been a great opportunity for them to put their business skills to the test.
“The whole college is looking forward to the final and we are all rooting for them to win.”
Schools, colleges and sixth forms across the region have submitted more than 100 creations for Subway’s 10th anniversary Design a Sub Challenge.
The competition challenged budding entrepreneurs to design a new six-inch sub. Students were also tasked with creating a marketing campaign for their creation, with a fictitious budget of £50,000.
The Hedingham School team produced a sub, which they named the InTENsify.
The pupils now face a Dragon’s Den-style pitch to a panel of Subway experts at Cambridge University next month.
Adam May, from Subway, said: “We have received some outstanding entries and it was a tough decision deciding who would make it to the final pitch. The six teams of finalists should be proud of their achievement in getting so far in the competition; it is a true testament to all of their hard work and creativity.”
Hedingham School will be competing against five schools – Norwich High School for Girls, The Elizabeth Woodville School in Northampton, James Hornsby School in Basildon, Essex, Northampton College and the Royal Hospital School near Ipswich.
