Hays Travel in Sudbury delighted by recognition after travel chain named in list of UK's top 100 employers

A travel agent, which operates a store in Sudbury, has been hailed as one of the UK’s top 100 employers.

Hays Travel, an independent travel agent chain, was recognised among the 100 Best Companies to Work For in the Sunday Times.

Compiled by Best Companies, the prestigious list reflects the findings of a survey conducted to establish the level of staff engagement at businesses across the UK.

Last year, Hays Travel acquired 555 former Thomas Cook stores after the iconic brand went into liquidation.

Following a major takeover deal, Hays Travel set out to reopen dozens of stores under its own brand, including the Sudbury branch in North Street.

Store manager Matt Shave, who previously worked for Thomas Cook at its Bury St Edmunds branch, secured a position at the town store when it opened in December.

Praising the company’s recent recognition, he said its achievement had been well-deserved.

“We are very pleased,” he said. “We were excited to join this company and they have been wonderful to work for.

“They have looked after us very well, so it’s fantastic for them to receive this recognition.”

Reflecting on the first couple of months since the branch opened, Mr Shave said the business had been well-supported.

“We have received positive feedback from customers who have told us that they will be coming back to see us,” said the 28-year-old.

Mr Shave said he was pleased that the new team had established a close bond.

“It feels like a small family,” he said, adding that his fellow staff had been supportive of each other in their new roles.

“It’s become a close-knit team,” added Mr Shave, who said the branch was now looking for an assistant manager after Fern Lock, who had filled the role, left to pursue a position in graphic design.

Hailing the commitment of his colleagues, John Hays, managing director at Hays Travel, added: “The company would be nothing without its amazing team, so I am thrilled that we are recognised as having a happy and motivated workforce.”
