Great Cornard couple heap praise on Slimming World group after weight loss success
After capturing a glimpse of herself in a photograph, Sam Higgs was determined to shed the pounds.
Disappointed by her appearance in a friend’s wedding picture, the 39-year-old, from Great Cornard, made the bold decision to join a local weight loss group.
“I really didn’t like the photos,” said Mrs Higgs, who was engaged to her partner, Rhys, at the time. “I thought to myself, ‘I don’t want to look like that in my own wedding pictures’, so I knew I had to do something about it.”
Having lost weight at Slimming World during her weekly sessions, alterations had to be made to Mrs Higgs’ wedding dress for her big day in 2015.
“I was a lot happier and I felt more comfortable, so I was really pleased,” she said.
Reflecting on her low self-esteem before her transformation, Mrs Higgs, of Dove House Meadow, said: “I used to hate going shopping and it got to a point where I could only buy clothes online; I hated it, and I would come home feeling depressed.”
In December, she was delighted to have reached her target weight after losing over five stone, with husband Rhys, 46, and mother-in-law Irene both joining her at the group.
“They have been so supportive,” said Mrs Higgs, adding that Rhys had noticed a significant improvement in his own health, having suffered from sleep apnea and asthma.
Praising the collective efforts of the group, Sharon Summers, a consultant who hosts the Great Cornard group in Wells Hall Road, said: “I’m delighted that our members have lost weight so beautifully.
“It has made a big difference to their lives and to their whole families’ lives, and all of them are happier and healthier now.”
Mrs Summers added: “Slimming has never been more important – there are many overweight and obese people in our area and we just want to help even more people to make real changes for life – and there’s no better job satisfaction than that.”
