Sudbury’s Siam surgery begins month of fund-raising for Stroke Association after nurse’s daughter had stroke aged four
A month-long campaign in support of stroke survivors is taking place at a Sudbury GP practice throughout May – inspired by a nurse whose young daughter suddenly suffered a stroke last year.
Siam Surgery has announced plans for a series of events over the course of this month to help raise money and awareness for the Stroke Association.
Fund-raising at the practice, which is based within Sudbury Community Health Centre in Church Field Road, kicks off with a charity bake sale today, from 1pm to 4pm.
Staff members are also planning a quiz, a wear-an-ugly-jumper-to-work day, and a sponsored static bike ride within the surgery, which will see staff cycling different distances on a rotation.
In addition, an appeal has been sent out to local businesses to donate prizes towards a proposed charity raffle.
The surgery chose to help the Stroke Association to support practice nurse Jess and her partner Ian, after their daughter Emily had a stroke last year at the age of four.
Amy Bates, patient services manager at Siam Surgery, said they wanted to spread awareness of the charity, but also highlight the signs of a stroke and educate the public on how to act.
“We always do events each year to try to raise awareness and money to donate to charity,” she told SuffolkNews.
“We thought, this year, with what happened, it would be great to raise as much as we can for the Stroke Association.
“There has been brilliant support because of everything Jess and her family has gone through.
“Staff have been putting themselves forward, and there are lots of little things that we’re planning to do.
“It’s about sharing their story and letting people know the signs to look out for.”
Full details about the dates of each fund-raising event will be shared by the surgery at www.facebook.com/siamsurgeryofficial.
Anybody who would like to contribute, or any business willing to donate a prize towards the raffle, is asked to get in touch with the practice by emailing siamsurgery.patientcontact@nhs.net.
