Fully booked: Fundraising events in aid of Suffolk Libraries Day prove bestsellers

Fundraising events took place in 44 libraries across the county on Saturday to mark Suffolk Libraries Day.

Each library held its own unique event and, in Long Melford, organisers hit upon a seasonal topic by holding an apple day.

With apple-based crafts and games, the library held an apple press demonstration and there were chutneys, juice, cakes and pastries – all made from apples on sale.

Manager Jack Norman said: “We had apple prints on bags and rock painting for the children. We were very pleased with how the day went, considering the weather.

“Thanks to our volunteers and brilliant support from Melford Tea Room, Belle Bakes, Lavenham Brook Farm and Phoenix Coaches we raised £427, which was above our expectation.”

She added: “It certainly raised awareness of the library in the village.”

At Sudbury Library on Market Hill, funds were raised by selling cakes and home bakes.

There was also a book sale and scavenger hunt involving participants solving clues to discover facts about Sudbury.

Great Cornard Library staged an autumn fair. On sale were crafts, cakes, books and refreshments.

James Powell, from Suffolk Libraries, said: “Suffolk Libraries Day ran to generate support and awareness of the service and to raise funds to support it.”
