Family-run restaurant Starburger celebrates 40 years of trading in Sudbury

A family-run restaurant, which has been a part of the Sudbury landscape for the past four decades, celebrates a milestone anniversary today, as the business continues undeterred by the coronavirus lockdown.

Starburger is marking 40 years of trade, having opened at its current site in North Street on November 25, 1980.

Owner and founder Musa Zorba, who runs the restaurant with his wife Sally, told the Free Press the town had changed a lot during this time, but added that the restaurant had always been a family business, and will remain this way going forward.

“When I started, I was a young boy,” said Musa. “Now, I’m 60. So many things have changed.

“There have been ups and downs. Obviously, coronavirus has changed everything. But Sudbury is still a lovely market town. That’s why I’ve stayed for 40 years.

“We’re one of the longest-running family businesses in Sudbury. I’ve got two boys and they will take over when I retire.”

Although the restaurant is currently closed due to the second UK-wide lockdown, which is set to run until at least the start of next month, it is still offering a meal delivery service to residents in and around the Sudbury area.

Sally added: “During the first lockdown, we were shut for six weeks, and then we started doing takeaways.

“When we opened again, things started to pick up, and Eat Out to Help Out helped, but nothing has been like it was before lockdown.

“We’re still here, fighting fit and ready to come out on the other side of this lockdown. It has always been a family business, and it’s nice to show people that there are still some old businesses left in the town.”
