Sudbury father-of-four Andy Rimmer remembered as 'intelligent and quick-witted' after death at age of 57

A father-of-four from Sudbury has been remembered for his quick wit and humour and distinctive gothic style, following his death last month.

Lifelong Suffolk resident Andrew Rimmer – known to family and friends as Andy – died on Thursday, September 23, following a traffic collision while riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He was 57 years old.

Mr Rimmer had deep links to Sudbury, as the grandson of renowned local artist John Rimmer, and he was easily recognised around town for his all-black attire, tattoos and complementary skull jewellery.

For more than 30 years, he worked at the former Delphi Diesel Systems plant in Newton Road, and built many lasting friendships during his long tenure.

During his spare time, he often enjoyed a drink with friends at the Mill Hotel, and held a particular passion for the natural world, frequently taking his children to nature reserves and the Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds.

His daughter, Beth, told the Suffolk News: “He was a very intelligent man, but he also liked to make a lot of jokes to make his family and friends laugh.

“He was a really friendly person. He loved nature, the outdoors and going on long walks, which we often did with him as kids.

“Because Sudbury is such a close-knit town and Delphi was such a huge company, everyone knew him.

“He would do anything for anyone and will be extremely missed.”

In addition to his love for nature, Mr Rimmer was a keen photographer, capturing pictures of his family, wildlife and scenery, and he was an avid fan of Star Trek, Doctor Who and the books of H P Lovecraft and Stephen King.

He also had a strong enthusiasm for motorbikes, regularly taking long rides through the countryside and to the coast. He was a former member of the Suzuki owners’ club.

Mr Rimmer is survived by his mother Eunice, his brother Adrian and his four daughters Beth, Abbie, Morrigan and Rebekka.

His funeral will take place at West Suffolk Crematorium in Risby on October 27 at 11am.

Donations on Andy’s behalf to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) are welcome via the charity’s website, or by purchasing an RSPB badge on its eBay page.
