Did you see lots of ants around Suffolk yesterday?

Some may have noticed something bugging them more than usual yesterday.

For those who were outside at any stage, you may have spotted an unusual amount of ants.

But don't worry, in case you were thinking it might be a regular occurrence over the next few months, it is actually because it was 'Flying Ant Day.'

According to the Royal Society of Biology, it is a day, once a year, when males and new queens leave the nest to mate, with many ant colonies doing so on the same day when conditions are just right.

It is the way many ant species, including the black garden ant 'Lasius niger', leave their previous nest to begin new colonies.

According to a survey carried out by Professor Adam Hart from The University of Gloucestershire and the Royal Society of Biology starting in 2012, there is not just one flying ant day; the date changes each year dependant on the weather.
