Customers return as sun shines on Sudbury market day

Despite the huge fire in the town centre on Sunday that destroyed homes and businesses, shoppers returned to the town on for the market day today.

Boosted by the reopening of a footpath between the town centre and Friars Street, shops owners and stall holders were pleased to see customers arriving after initial doubts.

Carolyn Munro of Munro’s Fishmongers said the footpath had been helpful in bringing people into the town, saying trade was as busy as normal.

Dominic Sullivan, owner of Sullivan’s garden plants on the market, said traders had been a little nervous about returning, unsure of what disruption there may be.

He commended the organisation of the town council, adding everybody was back in their usual spots.

“I’ve had quite a few of my regulars today,” he said. “There has been maybe a few less but there has been people about.”

With the reopening of the footpath Pizza Express was open for the first time since the fire, while Clare Earthroll from Nanook said trade had picked up since the path was reopened.
