Just Creations in Sudbury offers new high street platform for independent makers and micro-businesses

Independent arts and crafts makers are taking a new route on to the high street, following the launch of a dedicated Sudbury shop this month.

Just Creations opened its doors in Gaol Lane at the start of March, offering shelf rental space for micro-businesses to showcase and sell their creations.

The wares of 22 local creators are already on show at the hub, which was previously trialled in a pop-up format at smaller premises in August.

It was opened by seamstress Nicki Bowles, who is no stranger to the independent crafts scene through her handmade gifts business Just Sew By Nicki.

She explained that there was a need for an outlet to help small businesses like hers, following the closure of Duck in Boots, also in Gaol Lane, last summer.

The shop had provided a platform for start-ups at its ‘duck pod’ rental spaces, but it had to close due to financial difficulties.

Nicki told Suffolk News: “When Duck in Boots closed, it was a blow because that’s where I got my main sales, and I know the other crafters there were quite down about it.

“When it closed, I took over one of the pods to keep the business on the high street, but it was not quite big enough, so, as soon as these bigger premises came up, I took them over and expanded.

“It’s basically about bringing all these small businesses together and helping to get their name out there. There’s not a lot of opportunity for them to have their own shops, because the overheads are so high.

“The pop-up last year was great and the landlord was very helpful. From personal experience, Gaol Lane can be difficult, but we’ve had an increase in customers. It’s just about shouting that we are here.

“Craft fairs are how most of us get noticed, plus Facebook and Instagram. They are great but, at the same time, it’s a lot of work to get yourself out there.

“Now, customers can come in, make a request and we can make something personalised to order.”

Just Creations is currently open between 9.30am and 4pm from Tuesday through to Saturday.
