Councillors and residents voice objections to plans for major housing and industrial development in Hadleigh

Hadleigh Town Council has objected to plans to build a large housing estate and industrial area off Ipswich Road.

The council has criticised proposals put forward by Persimmon Homes for the development of phase two of the Hadleigh east urban extension plan on land south of Tower Mill Lane.

Hadleigh town manager Andrew McMillan has written to Babergh District Council planners to voice the town council’s concerns.

He said: “There is insufficient infrastructure to accommodate the quantum of houses proposed. There is no meaningful green space and no landscape buffer between employment and residential areas.

“The development would be car-dominated with poor accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists, poor emergency vehicle access and no provision for social and community sports uses. The development is too dense and out of character with the local vernacular.”

The application, which has yet to be considered, has received 14 objections on Babergh’s planning portal, with no comments in favour.

Richard Fletcher, on behalf of The Hadleigh Society, said the organisation objected to both parts of the application on grounds of policy, principle and detailed design issues.

Hadleigh resident Amanda Brodie said: “More attention should be paid to balancing the needs of the community as a whole when considering housing applications in Hadleigh.

“There are too many homes being built without the infrastructure to cope, creating an imbalance in terms of schools, medical facilities and parking.”
