Coronavirus Log: How self-isolation has become a strange new reality

Getting out of the daily routine can be quite pleasant every once in a while - it enables us to recharge our batteries and feel refreshed.

But the prospect of remaining at home for the foreseeable future doesn’t hold the same appeal and it is, quite frankly, a strange reality that takes time to adjust to.

Every morning when my alarm clock goes off I realise that my current ‘office’ is a lot closer than it was a couple of weeks ago, so, without any hesitation I hit the snooze button.

Despite allowing myself this small luxury of a few extra minutes sleep, I must add, that I am still early for work, logged on to my laptop and checking emails well before 9am.

I would never have thought that I would miss my daily walk to work, but it seems it was something I took for granted.

And while some people may appreciate not having to drive, waiting in endless queues during the morning rush hour, it’s only when your routine suddenly changes that you realise you must quickly adapt.

Reporting on the coronavirus crisis while the number of cases continues to rise certainly serves as a stark reminder of the seriousness of the situation, but it has also highlighted the kindness in the community.

Countless individuals have stepped up and become dedicated to supporting those struggling, which has been both moving and humbling to see.

When we eventually return to some sort of normality, I’ll walk to the office with a new enlightened perspective.
