Club in ‘state of shock’ after cyclist dies in accident

Cycle Club Sudbury’s chairman says the club is in a “state of shock” following the death of one of their top competitors.

A cyclist who died in an accident in Lorkin’s Lane, Twinstead, on Sunday has been named locally as Jonathan Weatherley, of Sible Hedingham. He had been a member of the club for the last six years.

“Obviously the whole club is in a state of shock at the moment,” said chairman David Fenn. “It is quite a difficult time.

“Jonathan was a real gentleman, he really was. He was a superb athlete and he held all of our recent club records, including individual time trial records and team records.

“I believe when he started with us it was the first time he had joined a cycling club, and he was such a good rider.

“He made tremendous improvements in a short period of time and over the last couple of years he was untouchable in the club. He was so far ahead of some of our other riders.

“Later on we would like to run an event and dedicate it to Jonathan.”

Mr Fenn also described Mr Weatherley as a “brilliant organiser”, helping to put on events in the club’s calender.

Tonight, at the final event of the season, riders are to be given the option whether to take part or not, while next Thursday’s end of time trial series meal will go ahead, and will be held as a celebration of Mr Weatherley’s life and achievements.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the accident.

A member of the public found a cyclist at about 3.40pm and called emergency services. Paramedics and an air ambulance attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed until 9pm while police carried out initial investigations.

Officers from the Essex Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for information from anyone who may have seen the cyclist at Lorkin’s Lane between 3pm and 3.30pm.

The rider was wearing a cycle helmet, cycling shorts and a blue top. He was riding a road bike with racing handlebars.
