Nethergate Brewery and Distillery in Long Melford, near Sudbury, completes land acquisition to help advance expansion ambitions

A major expansion is in the pipeline for a Suffolk brewery, after the business took the ‘momentous step’ of buying a large area of surrounding land.

Nethergate Brewery and Distillery announced on Sunday that it has completed the purchase of approximately eight acres of field and woodland around its premises in Long Melford.

The land acquisition at Rodbridge Corner will enable the company to begin pursuing ambitions to extend its facilities, with a formal planning application expected in the coming months.

Subject to approval from Babergh District Council, Nethergate intends to create extra production space to increase its output, as well as improve its bar, shop and visitor centre.

A statement from the brewery said its team were ‘over the moon’ to have secured the land, and they look forward to sharing further details in the near future.

“After quite some time in pursuit, we’re absolutely delighted that we have completed the purchase of the field and woodland surrounding our brewery and distillery in Long Melford,” read the statement.

“This is a momentous step for us. The additional land allows us to grow and expand our facilities for years to come, without the hassle of having to relocate.

“Our team is over the moon, and we’re brimming with exciting ideas for how to use our new eight-acre space.

“We’ve certainly come a long way from our humble beginnings on Clare High Street way back when.

“We’re passionately excited about our new venture and look forward to sharing our journey.”

In addition to expanded premises, the brewery also aims to grow the size of its car park, having acknowledged the current difficulties with providing sufficient space for its visitors.

Further information on the plans will be revealed in due course.
