Martin Seeley, bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, enjoys nativity play at Creeting St Mary primary school, near Stowmarket

Suffolk’s bishop has described being moved by a special Christmas performance at a village primary school.

Children at Creeting St Mary Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School, near Stowmarket, took part in a nativity play last Monday in front of pupils, parents, teachers – plus a very special guest.

Martin Seeley, bishop for St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, was among those who enjoyed the performance.

Bishop Martin said: “This was such a joyful occasion to be able to take time with primary school children and to share in their wonderful portrayal of the events of Jesus’ birth.

“I was moved by the seriousness, energy and delight with which the children performed – and by some lovely moments of humour.”

Bishop Martin said there was no doubt that December can feel chaotic, with the pressure to create the perfect Christmas.

However, in the midst of this, churches can offer an opportunity to find peace, he continued.

Bishop Martin added: “The Church of England’s theme for Advent and Christmas 2024 is to follow the star and to stay calm and bright which draws upon the world-famous carol, Silent Night.

“My message to the St Mary’s Creeting primary school children and indeed to all of us is, may we enjoy ourselves this Christmas, and find ways to help those who are less fortunate to enjoy themselves too.”
