Ladies Day girls football tournament will take place in Stowupland, near Stowmarket, on July 14

This summer a Suffolk football club will be hosting its first ever Ladies Day, bringing 400 girls from across the area to play the game they love, in a safe and fun environment.

The tournament on Saturday, July 14, has been organised by the Stowupland Falcons Football Club, near Stowmarket, which sees 40 girls attend its free, weekly Wildcat sessions.

Charlotte Darlow Hunt, Stowupland Falcons Under 11 Girls Manager, said: “Often you go to festivals and they have a girl’s section within the tournament but Ladies Day will be special - it highlights that girls can play too.

“The day will finish with the Falcons women’s team holding a charity match, where the younger generations can really get inspired and see that regardless of age you can still join in with football.”

Darlow Hunt, believes girl’s and women’s football has grown massively, since the England Women’s team, known as the Lionesses, won the Euros in 2022.

She said: “In Suffolk the female game is continually growing, season on season, and things such as the Ipswich Town Women playing at Portman Road is definitely playing a part.

“There are already 92 girls and women’s teams in Suffolk.

“Yes, there are still areas which need to be improved but we have come a long way since when I was younger, playing as a child.”

Darlow Hunt said the rapid growth in girls playing for the Falcons, has seen them start a under 10’s and under 9’s team.

Previously girls in this age category would have had to play as part of boy’s teams - due to a lack of numbers.

She said: “There is a buzz around the football club with Ladies Day, so many people are working behind the scenes to make the day a success.”

“The girls involved with development and competitive football are looking forward to finishing their season and having some fun small sided games.

“The younger girls who have just begun their football journey are pumped for their first ‘real tournament’.
