Stowmarket station plans submitted for roof and staircase repairs
Plans have been submitted to reinstate and maintain a Grade II listed building at a town’s train station.
The plans to repair Stowmarket train station were submitted by Greater Anglia to Mid Suffolk District Council and includes replacing the south tower’s staircase and repairing the building’s leaky roof.
The Jacobean red brick building was originally opened in 1846 and, if approved, the repair works would not impact passengers as it is a private area of the station not accessed by the public.
A Greater Anglia spokesperson said: “The building is Grade II listed and the tower roof on the right-hand side has been leaking and as a result, the wooden stairs are damaged.
“We are proposing to reconstruct the roof, remove the staircase and install a new one - the work will be carried out in two stages.
“Our planning application was submitted on August 16, and we will await the council’s decision.”

The plans state that original materials will be retained where possible as well as the building’s original features such as the windows, skirting and surrounds which will be redecorated.
It is planned for the roof to be repaired in the first phase of construction to ensure the building is ‘weathertight’ and then the stairs will be replaced in the second phase.
