Haughley George V Playing Field remains closed due to clean up after travellers leave site

A village park remains closed due to a clean up after travellers moved onto the site for more than a week.

The travellers left the Haughley George V Playing Field in the early hours of yesterday morning having pitched up on the site last Monday.

Haughley Parish Council said the park will remain closed until further notice due to contamination and a risk to health and safety.

A specialist decontamination team began a clean-up of the site yesterday.

In a statement the council said: “The signs remain to advise not to enter due to contamination.

“We’re sure you’re with us that we cannot allow children to play on the site or possibly even consider dog walking around the field until human excrement is cleared up completely.

“We’re hoping this will be finished and can be returned to the community as a safe and happy place as soon as possible, but we do need to allow the specialists decontamination work to take place in its entirety.

“Do consider your children’s, your own and your pets health and safety and bear with us a bit longer.

“It is a small price to pay for peace of mind.”

The council added large blocks will be placed over the next day or two to restrict vehicle movement onto the fields.
