Sizewell C lays down Sizewell Link Road and Two Village Bypass contracts to Galliford Try and A12 roundabouts to Breheny, based in Needham Market
Sizewell C has laid down the contracts for its crucial new road infrastructure which will help limit the impacts of its construction on the community.
The power station announced Galliford Try will build its new 6.5km Sizewell Link Road and 1.8km Two Village Bypass, while Suffolk-based, family-owned Breheny Civil Engineering will construct two new connecting roundabouts on the A12.
The roads are expected to be completed in 2027 and 2026 respectively; the Link Road will run past Theberton and Middleton Moor and have new roundabouts and junctions at each end to connect to existing highways, while the bypass – which has long been requested by residents – will allow for construction traffic to avoid Farnham and Stratford St Andrew.
Breheny’s roundabouts at Friday Street and Yoxford will facilitate safer connections and improve safety on a stretch of the A12 which is regarded as high-risk locally.
Damian Leydon, Sizewell C site delivery director, said: “These contracts also mark a milestone in the offsite infrastructure we need to build Sizewell C.
“By building these roads and roundabouts, we can deliver what we need safely and efficiently, and we can reduce the impact of construction traffic on the existing road network here in Suffolk at the same time.
“We know any big infrastructure project of this size brings disruption – a big part of our job is to minimise that.
These new road schemes are part of a wider programme, including our park and rides, freight management facilities, and rail and sea infrastructure, which will allow us to do that over the course of the construction phase.”
The contracts follow the earlier multi-million award to Ipswich-based Jackson Civil Engineering to deliver key road schemes for the project.
Breheny, based in Needham Market, has been building Britain’s infrastructure since 1963. Mark Burrows, its regional commercial director, said the power station offers a chance for Suffolk to showcase its extensive talent and resources ‘for years to come’.
“We originally worked on Sizewell B in the 1980s, and we have completed several projects on Sizewell C already.
“We’re delighted to have now been awarded the construction of the new roundabouts on the A12 at Yoxford and Friday Street. We’ve been working on sections of the A12 since the 1970s and look forward to continuing to improve the A12 with the building of the new roundabouts to support the construction of Sizewell C.”
Sizewell C is aiming to deliver 70 per cent of its construction value to British companies. It recently announced it has signed 300 UK contracts worth £2.5 billion.
