Southwold harbour fire: fundraiser for Mrs T’s Fish and Chip shop brings in over £3,000 two days after blaze as clean-up of Sole Bay Fish Co to begin

A fundraiser to help out a fish and chip shop heavily damaged in a huge blaze in Southwold has raised thousands of pounds – and the clean-up of another is set to begin.

The fire engulfed Mrs T’s Fish and Chips and neighbouring Sole Bay Fish Co at Blackshore Quay in the early hours of Monday.

Police and fire crews were called shortly before 1am. The main road was closed off, but reopened at 5.45pm the same day.

Eight engines plus support vehicles, with about 55 firefighters and a drone, were deployed and the incident was contained quickly.

A number of gas cylinders at the scene exploded.

A fundraiser was set up yesterday on behalf of Mrs T’s Fish and Chips, which has already raised £3,335.

Jasmine Webb, who set up the fundraiser, said: “The devastating fire happened early hours on May 1, and destroyed the small family-run business.

“They have had so much love and support on social media posts and many people suggested a fundraiser.

“This will be to support the family, staff and business at this unfortunate time.”

In addition to the two chip shops, eight fishermens’ huts were also engulfed.

The fund-raiser has since exceeded its target.

A spokesman for East Suffolk Council said the affected area remains fenced off.

Clean-up operations at Sole Bay Fish Co are due to begin later today.

“Harbour operations remain unaffected by the blaze and with continue as normal,” he added.
