Pin Money tipster column: Charlie Appleby’s Rebel Romance seeking another Dubai Sheema Classic victory
REBEL’S ROMANCE flew out of Stansted last weekend as the head of the Newmarket challenge at the Dubai World Cup meeting at Meydan on Saturday when he will be seeking back-to-back wins in the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic.
Just like a year ago, the Godolphin flagbearer used the Emir’s Trophy in Qatar in February for a successful launchpad to the $6m contest, in which he faces French hope Calandagan.
Unlike some of Charlie Appleby’s Dubai Carnival stars, Rebel’s Romance prefers the surroundings of Moulton Paddocks to the desert and he has thrived at home since his all-the-way triumph in Qatar over The Foxes.
Earlier on the glittering card in Dubai, Rebel Romance’s jockey William Buick gets the call-up for a first sit on the speedy BELIEVING, who heads a strong turnout from Headquarters in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint.
The five-year-old mare will be having her first start in the Coolmore colours on Saturday having changed hands for 3m Guineas at the December Sales, after which she was returned to George Boughey.
Since then, Believing has enjoyed a couple of racecourse gallops to put her right for this weekend, with trainer telling me he had ‘never had her better’.
Among the opposition – and providing he handles a first overseas trip okay – I expect AUDIENCE to have a good each-way shout in the race as he has come to hand early, as he usually does for John and Thady Gosden.
Closer to home up the road at Yarmouth on Saturday, the racing gets going late afternoon on account of the Grand National, but MANEATER could be worth the wait on her debut for Richard Spencer in the Quinnbet 2nd to the Favourite Novice Fillies Stakes over 1m2f.
The daughter of Golden Horn has always been held in high regard at Sefton Lodge and holds an Irish Oaks entry as a consequence.
Also on the east coast, ARCHIVIST can make his first start for William Haggas a winning one when he tackles the Quinnbet Daily Free Bet Novice Stakes over 1m2f.
The son of Dubawi was trained by Sir Michael Stoute last year when he posted three high-class placed efforts, including a second to the useful Seaplane at Newmarket in September.
Given that the latter went on to finish fourth in a Group 1 at Doncaster, next time bodes well for the chances of Archivist, who is fit from some recent work on the Limekilns.
Closer at hand at Chelmsford today, Peter Chapple-Hyam’s FOREST HAZE should not be written off despite having a rating of just 47 in the Racing Value at Bet365 Apprentice Handicap.
The five-year-old mare is having her first start for the St Gatien operator having previously been across town with Martin Dunne, but she has been showing up well in her recent work, including on the Waterhall grass gallops.
Chapple-Hyam has moved quickly to book David Simcock’s promising apprentice Taryn Langley for the ride and the hint should be taken.
