Norwich City youngster Oli Newman eager for more after making England Under-16 debut

Oli Newman has had his first taste of international football with England – and the teenager is keen for more.

Having caught the eye with his performances in the Norwich City academy, the Burwell-raised 15-year-old was called up to represent England Under-16s during their recent trip to Italy.

And having started in a 1-1 draw against the Azzurri, Newman’s appetite has been well and truly whetted.

“It feels like all the hard work has been leading to this,” said the attacking midfielder, who played within the youth ranks of Burwell Swallows, Exning and Newmarket Town before linking up with Norwich.

“I had a training camp with England last October but I got injured and missed the next game.

“I got fit again, started playing for Norwich and thankfully I got another call-up.

“It was a bit surreal because a lot of the other boys are from Liverpool, Arsenal and all the other big clubs in the Premier League.

“But in terms of talent I felt like I was on their level – I’ve got confidence in my ability.

“The coaches said now we have to go back to our clubs are keep playing well.

“I’ve got to score some goals for Norwich, get some assists and hopefully catch their eye again.”

The Bottisham Village College pupil, who tries to mould his game on Manchester City’s England international Phil Foden, has also turned out for Wales at age-group level.

He qualifies to play for the Dragons through his mum Zoe – and the two countries are happy for him to continue representing both.

“It’s not until senior internationals where you can only play for one country,” he said.

“Both countries are very encouraging because the more experience of international football I get at this age the better it is for me as a player.

“There’s a few more games coming up for both so we’ll see if I get selected.”
