A group of travellers who set up camp in a Mildenhall playing field have been ordered to leave today.

On Thursday a convoy of travellers moved onto the town's Jubilee Fields.

The group is expected to leave within hours after Mildenhall High Town Council served a notice demanding that they move off the fields today.

Cllr Ruth Bowman, the town's mayor, warned if the group did not leave the site the council would be forced to move to the next stage and hire bailiffs.

"We are being as sensible as we can, we don't want to waste money but we must get our land back," she said.

A Suffolk Police spokesman said: “Police are aware of a traveller encampment at Jubilee Fields in Mildenhall and are working with the local council and partner agencies under agreed protocols around unauthorised encampments.

"Police will continue to monitor the situation.”
