Newmarket's Aldi store to open its doors 'early next year'

Work on Newmarket’s long-awaited Aldi store is set to start this autumn, the supermarket giant announced this week.

It is over a year since Aldi unveiled its plans for development of the former gasworks site next to the town’s leisure centre on Exning Road which had been unused for more than 30 years.

Four years ago Morrisons was given permission to build a new store on the site but in 2015, because of disappointing sales results, the Bradford-based company said it had reviewed its new store requirements and decided not to go ahead with the Newmarket project.

In March 2017 Aldi confirmed that it had bought the site and planned a mixed-use development alongside specialist care provider the Anchor Group, which wanted to build extra care apartments for the elderly on part of the land.

The plans were greeted with enthusiasm by town residents who took part in a public consultation.

Out of 902 people who responded to a questionnaire, 828 or 92 per cent of people were in favour of the development.

The most popular reason was that it would be an improvement for the area and that residents welcomed an Aldi supermarket.

The new supermarket is expected to open its doors during the first half of 2019 when, according to Aldi, 50 new jobs are due to be created in store.

Occupying the front part of the site, nearest to Exning Road, the store will be roughly the height of a two-storey residential building with a sales floor area of 1,254 square metres and parking for 119 cars.
