Needham Lake sustainable travel event encourages cycling and walking routes

More than 100 residents attended a free community event focused on travelling more sustainably to improve health, wellbeing and the environment.

It was hosted at Needham Lake on Saturday, April 15 and showcased electric bikes, balance bikes for children and cycle-powered games including a bike-powered blender to make smoothies.

The event was delivered by Suffolk County Council’s ‘Way To Go Suffolk’ team and Mid Suffolk District Council.

Nicola Fowler, Active Travel officer for Suffolk County Council, said: “It was absolutely brilliant - we really want to encourage cycling and walking in the area.

“Children were using the balance bikes all day long and the smoothie bike was so busy - I was covered in smoothie by the end of the day.

“Loads of people had trials on eclectic bikes too which is really great to see.”

There was also a Bike Doctor who fixed bikes to get them ‘ride ready’ and to test ride electric bikes around the lake.

Attendees could also learn more about walking routes in the area to see the benefits of changing their travel habits.

Nicola added: “It’s all about realising that there’s some lovely walking and cycling routes around Suffolk and we want to encourage people to use them more frequently.”
