Green Jack Brewery, based in Love Road, Lowestoft, wins big at CAMRA awards
A town brewery won big at the the national CAMRA beer awards.
Green Jack Brewery, based in Lowestoft, took home the gold medal in the Premium Bitter category for its Trawlerboys Best Bitter.
Meanwhile in the top award, Champion Beer of Britain, it claimed the bronze medal.
The winners were exclusively revealed at the Kelham Hall Beer and Cider Festival, in Newark, on October 23 after a rigorous two-year judging process.
Judges described the Green Jack product as an ‘attractive orangey beer, with nutty notes, a hint of chocolate and a fruity and sweet finish, making it ‘complex and very drinkable’.
Tim Dunford founded the brewery in 1993. He said: “We are absolutely delighted with another great result for Trawlerboys, now a double champion premium bitter.
“It is down to the dedication and hard work of the amazing team at Green Jack Brewery, that we have also won Champion Strong Stout/Porter with Baltic Trader.
“Two champion beers in the same year is fantastic.”
Trawlerboys won the same award back in 2017, while in 2019 it finished as the runner up.
Judging for the competition starts with individual nominations from CAMRA members and tasting panel nominations, which is followed by regional competitions.
Each round uses a strict blind tasting policy.
The East performed strongly in the awards as a whole, with Chelmsford’s Crouch Vale taking home the Champion Beer of Britain award for its Amarillo.
Laura Emson, CAMRA’s awards director, said: “After many years of CAMRA holding this competition, The Champion Beer of Britain final is still one of the most exciting days for us as well as for all the brewers involved.
“These awards cannot happen without the incredible work of volunteers that give up their time to see a worthy winner crowned."
Green Jack has its own pub, The Triangle Tavern in St Peters Street.
Mr Dunford said the brewery is looking forward to opening a new brewery tap and distribution centre next year.
