East Bergholt powerlifter Zoe Newson wins gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

Suffolk's Zoe Newson claimed her first Commonwealth Games gold medal in Birmingham last night, beating fellow English competitor Olivia Broome.

The 30-year-old powerlifter, from East Bergholt, won with 102.2 points - two more than Broome - to take home the gold medal.

Newson narrowly missed out on recording a new personal best (102kg), lifting 101kg in her final lift of the women's lightweight competition.

Despite that, she said to win the gold medal 'is a massive bonus'.

“I was just trying for a PB [102kg], to enjoy it and do my best really," said Newson.

"But coming away with the gold medal is a massive bonus. I didn't get the PB but I got the gold medal so I'm happy with that.

“As soon as I found out I just burst out crying backstage.”

Meanwhile, Ipswich's Hannah Martin continue to reap the rewards of success with her England hockey team-mates.

Martin made it five goals for the tournament in England's 5-0 win over Wales yesterday. It meant the women's hockey team booked their place in the semi-final against New Zealand.
