Ipswich Town: George Edmundson completes permanent switch to Championship club Middlesbrough following successful loan spell
George Edmundson has completed his move from Ipswich Town to Championship Middlesbrough, following returning from a successful loan move on Teeside.
The 27-year-old centre-half has joined Michael Carrick’s side on a two-and-a-half-year deal with SuffolkNews’ Blues media partners TWTD reporting they are set to “receive £600,000, some short-term top-ups, then £350,000 if Boro are promoted and a further £500,000 if they then stay up”.
Edmundson, who won back-to-back promotions under Kieran McKenna at Portman Road, spent the first half of the season with Middlesbrough where the former Glasgow Rangers player proved a big hit.
He was recalled by Town on a 24-hour clause on his season-long agreement, following two reported failed bids from his loan club during the week.
But he was always in line for a move back to Teeside as he was unavailable to play for anyone but Town or Boro this season.
And Edmundson, whose contract with the Blues was up in the summer, has been registered in time to face Preston at Deepdale this afternoon (3pm).
He becomes the second player to have departed McKenna’s squad in the January transfer window, following hot on the heels of striker Ali Al-Hamadi being revealed as signing on loan for Stoke City last night.
Edmundson, who joined Town for around £1 million from Rangers in the summer of 2021, signing a four-year deal, made 71 starts and four substitute appearances in Suffolk, scoring one goal.
Meanwhile, Town have revealed new loan signing Enciso from Brighton & Hove Albion will wear the number nine shirt that had ended up being left vacant in the summer.
